CHEER Fall Program 

To All Cheerleaders and Parents,

Welcome to the 2021 Darien Junior Cheerleading League (DJCL) Fall Season.  Now in our 6th season our league give girls the opportunity to learn age appropriate cheerleading skills while gaining an understanding of teamwork and community spirit.  The program serves as a foundation for cheerleading at the high school level.  We are looking forward to cheering and motivating our DJFL teams and join all the other Fairfield County Football League communities with a successful and rewarding cheerleading program.

The DJCL squads will consist of Darien girls in Grades 2 through 8.  Squads will be divided by grade level with the number of squads and girls per squads determined based on those that registered and coaches available.  While subject to change, squads may be comprised of girls in Grades 2-4 and Grades 5-8.  The individual squads will cheer for DJFL tackle teams most closely associated with their grade level depending on the home schedule.  The DJFL Football Season is expected to begin September 4/5, 2021 and continue through early-mid November depending on playoff schedules and results. 


The success of the DJCL will depend on parent volunteers.  Interested in getting involved with the development of the DJCL program?  We are looking for many volunteers for be part of our efforts as squad coaches and administrative/organizational leaders. Please contact any of the DJCL Founders or email if interested.   When registering your child you can also indicate if you want to serve as a coach, squad manager or be part of DJCL administrative/organizational leaders.



Preseason Practices -

To properly prepare the squads for the start of the tackle football season, squads will begin preseason practices during the Week of August 23, 2021.  (see Cheer Registration page for more information)

Fall Season Practices –

Practices will be held once per week during the season.  Practices will be held on Fridays during the season. Exact times for each squad will be determined based on coach’s availability but will be typically 1 hour long (possibly 15-30 minutes longer at the beginning of the season).  Practices will be held outside at a location to be determined.  Indoor practices, if needed, will be subject to gymnasium availability at the elementary schools. DJCL squads will cheer DJFL tackle teams in grades 3 through 8.  Typically each DJFL team has 2 teams per grade depending on the number of players.  DJFL home games are played at DHS Stadium on Saturdays and Sundays.  Games are approximately 1- 1.5 hours long with the first game beginning at 8:00 am.  Depending on DHS Stadium availability, DJFL games are scheduled throughout the day but are typically completed by 1:00 pm. 

Cheerleading squads will cheer mainly at HOME games and will only cheer ONE game per weekend.   Cheering during inclement weather will be at the discretion of the coaches. (See Program Details page for more information)


Uniform sizing will be held during preseason practices.  A cheerleading uniform will be provided by DJCL with a $150 deposit, refundable deposit if the uniform is returned on time in good condition.  Deposits in the form of check payable to Darien Junior Cheerleading League and post dated December 1, 2021 will be required at uniform pick up.  Uniforms will be distributed in August (exact date TBD).  The cheerleading uniform will include:

  • Uniform (provided by DJCL and to be returned)
  • Pom Poms (provided by DJCL and to be returned)
  • Hair bow (provided by DJCL)
  • Cheer Socks (provided by DJCL) 
  • White bodyliner and blue boy shorts (provided by DJCL)
  • Pink Hair bow for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month (provided by DJCL)
  • Pink Pompoms (to be distriubuted at games in October).
  • Practice shorts/leggings or sweatpants
  • All white cheer sneakers (preferred) or regular all white sneakers (no Keds)
  • Cold weather gear - gray leggings 
  • Cold weather gear - fleece cheer jacket
  • Cold weather gear - fleece headband/ear warmer (provided by DJCL)

DJCL personalized attire may be available for the season.  Check this website for updates regarding the uniform requirements and where to purchase accessories.


Registration is open. The fee for the DJCL program is $250.00 per cheerleader, $450.00 for 2 sibling cheerleaders and $600.00 for 3 or more sibling cheerleaders.    NOTE: These registration deadlines may be different than the dates set forth for DJFL football players.  Late registration period is after the 1st game and the fee increases to $300.00 per cheerleader, $550.00 for 2 siblings and $700.00 for 3 or more siblings.

We encourage everyone to register online but for those who are more comfortable using the United States Postal Service or a fax machine, you can still register via these methods. All registration forms are included in this package and also are on the website. If you decide to register by mail, please print all the forms and mail or fax just the registration form to the address printed in the packet along with your check/credit card info. Payment must accompany your registration.
We urge you to register early in order to secure your child’s spot. Early registration will help us determine the required number of uniforms and begin developing the squads. 


The DJFL is pleased to continue our policy of supporting all town of Darien public employees (paid and volunteer). For 2020, contact Deb Medwar in order to qualify for the reduced rate that will be only $75 for registration fee. The uniform deposit check will be collected when the uniforms are distributed.  If you are registering online, please indicate your job in town and then skip the payments page and send an email to  . Our website assistant will code your registration accordingly so that you can make payment.


The DJCL understands there may be special needs in certain families that may result in children needing scholarship assistance with registration fees. Any applicants wishing to apply for the scholarship should email Deborah Medwar at dmedwar@optonline.net. We will keep all scholarship requests in the strictest confidence. Note that all scholarships will still require a $75 registration fee as well as a deposit check for the uniform (to be collected when the uniforms are distributed).  The deposit check will be returned at the end of the season when the uniform is returned.
